FEATURES: These clamping elements are self-locking and also provide a support function by positively resisting opposing force after clamping. A patented self-locking wedge mechanism maintains full clamping force if hydraulic pressure is disconnected or drops. Mount in any position, horizontal or vertical. The tapped plunger accepts a contact bolt or extension. The top-flange cartridge-type version shown here has a round design for direct and space-saving installation in the fixture body – ideal for clamping and supporting in bore holes and recesses. Optional extended piston rod for inductive or pneumatic position monitoring.
APPLICATIONS: Self-locking clamps are particularly suited for clamping on fixtures which are disconnected from their power source (machine-tool pallets, pallet storage systems, indexing machines, transfer lines). The support function is useful when machining forces are relatively high and directed against the clamping force, or when the workpiece must be held between opposing clamps in a neutral position and then immovably locked.
SIZES: Available in one size, either with or without an extended piston rod for position monitoring – see Dimensions page for part numbers. Clamping force at 4300 psi: CLAMPING ACTION: Applying fluid pressure to the A (clamping) port advances the piston, which in turn advances the clamping plunger via wedge contact. The plunger exerts clamping force and also resists opposing forces up to the maximum clamping force. If the workpiece yields or the contact bolt digs deeper into the material due to machining forces or vibrations, the clamp-support element instantaneously re-clamps provided that sufficient hydraulic pressure is available. Switching pressure to the B (unclamping) port positively retracts the piston and the clamping plunger.
OPTIONAL POSITION MONITORING: These clamps can be ordered with an extended piston rod for inductive or pneumatic position monitoring. Order an inductive or pneumatic position-control unit separately. For inductive position-control, also order two inductive proximity switches and two right-angle plugs.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS: If clamp-support elements are decoupled from their power source after clamping, e.g. on pallets, we recommend installing an accummulator in order to guarantee a re-clamping effect. The clamping plunger is designed to resist torsional forces, but cannot compensate for a permanent torque during operation. These elements cannot be used as pull-type cylinders.
MOUNTING: Fasten clamp with four socket-head cap screws. Threaded-cartridge clamps have O-ring seals on their outside diameter, so they require a precision mounting hole. Carefully follow hole-preparation instructions in the drawings. Optional mounting block and intermediate plates allow elevated installation with manifold mounting or standard fittings.
FLUID CONNECTION: Fluid passages must be drilled exactly as shown in the drawings. Do not use NPT fittings.
CONSTRUCTION: Plunger > Steel, case hardened. Body > Alloy steel, black oxide finish. Seals and wipers > FKM. |
