Ball Lock Pins & Quick-Release Pins
Carr Lane Detent Pins are economical quick-release alignment pins designed for applications that require fast, simple insertion and removal without a separate release mechanism. A solid shank provides the locating surface, while spring-loaded locking balls create enough retention force to help keep the pin in position during use.
Unlike a Ball Lock Pin, a Detent Pin is not positively locked. Instead, the locking balls are held outward by spring force. To install the pin, simply push it into the mating hole; to remove it, pull the pin with enough force to overcome the spring-loaded balls. This straightforward design makes Detent Pins especially useful when quick access and easy manual removal are more important than positive locking.
Standard Carr Lane Detent Pins are currently offered in stainless steel, with inch pin diameters from 3/16" to 1" and metric diameters from 6 mm to 12 mm. Multiple standard grip lengths are available, and special grip lengths up to 12" (300 mm) can be made to order. You can also configure a custom detent pin with the Carr Lane Part Configurator.
Carr Lane Detent Pins use a spring-loaded ball-retention system rather than an actuated locking mechanism. In the normal position, the locking balls project from the shank. As the pin is pushed through a properly sized mating hole, the balls retract against spring pressure and then extend again after passing through the hole.
Removal works in the opposite manner. Pulling on the pin forces the balls inward against the spring, allowing the pin to slide out without pressing a button, turning a handle, or using a tool. Most standard Detent Pins use two locking balls positioned around the shank to provide spring-force retention. Due to its smaller size, the 3/16"-diameter Detent Pin uses one locking ball.
