Ball Lock Pins & Quick-Release Pins
Carr Lane Detent Pins are economical quick-release alignment pins designed for fast, tool-free insertion and removal. A solid shank provides accurate alignment, while spring-loaded locking balls retain the pin after installation. Simply push the pin into place and pull it out when removal is required.
Unlike a Ball Lock Pin, a Detent Pin is held in position by spring force rather than a positive-locking mechanism. This makes detent pins ideal for applications that require convenient positioning, assembly, adjustment, or frequent component changeovers without high locking strength.
Choose from Standard, Marine, Economy, and Threaded Detent Pins to match your application, environment, handle requirements, and budget. Carr Lane Detent Pins are available in inch diameters from 3/16" to 1" and metric diameters from 6 mm to 12 mm, depending on the selected style.
Carr Lane Detent Pins use one or more spring-loaded locking balls to provide quick, convenient retention. As the pin is pushed through a properly sized hole, the locking balls retract into the solid shank. After passing through the assembly, the balls extend again and help resist accidental removal.
To remove the pin, apply sufficient pulling force to compress the spring-loaded balls and withdraw the shank. No button, handle mechanism, or removal tool is required.
Because retention is created by spring force, Detent Pins are not positive-locking devices. Applications that require a pin to remain securely locked until an intentional release action should use a Ball Lock Pin or another suitable positive-locking fastener.
Detent Pins are removable quick-release pins that use spring-loaded balls to retain the pin inside an assembly. They are commonly used to align, position, join, or temporarily secure components that must be assembled and disassembled quickly.
When the pin is inserted, the locking balls retract as they pass through the mating hole. Once clear of the assembly, the balls extend and create enough resistance to help keep the pin in place. Pulling the pin compresses the balls again, allowing the pin to be removed without tools.
Detent Pins are especially useful in applications involving:
Carr Lane offers four primary types of Detent Pins. Each provides quick push-to-insert and pull-to-remove operation, but the materials, head configuration, grip-length control, and handle options differ by style.
Select the appropriate style based on the required material, corrosion resistance, grip-length accuracy, handle configuration, available sizes, and application budget.
