Detent Pins

Detent Pins are removable quick-release pins that use spring-loaded balls to retain the pin inside an assembly. They are commonly used to align, position, join, or temporarily secure components that must be assembled and disassembled quickly.

When the pin is inserted, the locking balls retract as they pass through the mating hole. Once clear of the assembly, the balls extend and create enough resistance to help keep the pin in place. Pulling the pin compresses the balls again, allowing the pin to be removed without tools.

Detent Pins are especially useful in applications involving:

Carr Lane offers four primary types of Detent Pins. Each provides quick push-to-insert and pull-to-remove operation, but the materials, head configuration, grip-length control, and handle options differ by style.

• Standard detent pins feature a solid stainless-steel shank, spring-loaded locking balls, an integral head, and a pull ring. They are the most versatile option for industrial alignment, locating, fastening, and quick-change applications.
• Marine detent pins are manufactured from 316 stainless steel for enhanced corrosion resistance in marine, outdoor, washdown, and other moisture-prone environments. The ring-style design provides economical retention and convenient handling but is intended for applications where exact grip-length positioning is not critical.
• Economy detent pins provide simple, cost-effective quick-release retention for general-purpose applications. Because economy detent pins use a ring rather than a solid shoulder, they are best suited for applications where exact grip-length positioning is not required.
• Threaded detent pins have a threaded end that accepts a separately ordered knob or handle. This allows the pin to be configured with a handle shape, size, or material that matches the application and operator requirements. Compatible knobs are available in steel, stainless steel, and several plastic materials.

Select the appropriate style based on the required material, corrosion resistance, grip-length accuracy, handle configuration, available sizes, and application budget.

• Standard Detent Pins: Choose this type when accurate grip length is important, and a wide range of diameters or lengths is required.
• Marine Detent Pins: Choose this type when enhanced corrosion resistance is required, and exact grip length is not essential.
• Economy Detent Pins: Choose this type when cost is a primary consideration, and the application is indoors or in a general industrial environment.
• Threaded Detent Pins: Choose this type when a larger or more ergonomic handle is required, or when the pin must be adapted to a specialized operating environment.
