Clamping Hardware
Shoulder screws, also known as shoulder bolts, have a precision-ground cylindrical shoulder between the head and the threaded portion. The shoulder is larger in diameter than the thread and serves as an accurate reference or bearing surface. The shoulder diameter is ground to a closer tolerance than ordinary stripper bolts, for smoother rotation and better bearing action, and shoulder length is held to a plus-only tolerance, so the shoulder is never shorter than nominal. Made of alloy steel, heat treated to Rc 32-43, with a black oxide finish. Ideal for attaching gears and pulleys, aligning jigs, fixtures, and templates, and mounting circuit boards. Available in inch sizes with shoulder diameters from 1/4" to 3/4" and threads from #10-24 to 5/8"-11, and in metric sizes with shoulder diameters from 8 to 20mm and threads from M6x1 to M16x2, each in a choice of shoulder lengths. DFARS-compliant material is available.
Shoulder screws are commonly used in various applications requiring precise alignment, spacing, or rotational movement. Some common uses of shoulder screws include:
Carr Lane Mfg. offers shoulder screws made from alloy steel. These components undergo a heat treatment process to achieve a hardness of Rc 32-43.
Heat treatment is a controlled process used on these screws. It involves heating the steel to a specific temperature, then rapidly cooling it. This enhances its mechanical properties, such as strength and durability. A heat-treated alloy steel screw is the result.
Shoulder screws are known for their high tensile strength, toughness, and resistance to wear and corrosion. This makes them suitable for demanding applications where durability and reliability are critical.
